Craft Story!
Ajrakh begins with a slow sequence of nearly sixteen stages, including washing, resist printing, mordanting, dyeing and repeated drying. Khatri artisans align hand-carved wooden blocks to build its geometric patterns, traditionally coloured with indigo, madder, harda and iron. Pieces of Ajrakh fabric are then arranged into patchwork and joined through Kantha, an age-old running-stitch technique practised by the women of Kachchh. Rows of thick cotton stitches bind the fabric layers while giving the surface its distinctive texture and strength. Together, the GI-registered Kutch Ajrakh Print and hand-worked Tagai stitches turn each textile into a useful piece of Kachchh’s living heritage.
